This week, April 28th through May 4th, 2024, marks National Small Business Week in the United States. It's a time to recognize the critical role small businesses play in our nation's economy and communities.
Since 1963, presidents have issued proclamations declaring a National Small Business Week. This year is no different. President Biden highlighted the "grit and strength" of America's entrepreneurs who have persevered through challenging times.
The Power of Small Business
Small businesses are the backbone of the American economy. They employ nearly half of all private sector workers and are responsible for a significant portion of new jobs created each year. These businesses come in all shapes and sizes, from your local coffee shop to the neighborhood bookstore. They add vibrancy and character to our communities, and many are owned by our friends, families, and neighbors.
National Small Business Week Events
The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) spearheads National Small Business Week. This year, they've partnered with SCORE, a non-profit organization that provides free mentoring to small businesses, to host a free virtual summit from April 30th to May 1st. The summit offers educational webinars, exhibits, networking opportunities, and expert advice – all designed to help small businesses thrive.
Celebrating Entrepreneurs
National Small Business Week is also a time to celebrate the achievements of America's entrepreneurs. These individuals take risks, innovate, and create new opportunities. Their dedication and hard work are essential to the economic health of our nation.
Resources for Small Businesses
National Small Business Week is also a time to highlight the many resources available to help small businesses thrive. The SBA offers a wide range of programs and services:
Business counseling and mentoring
Loans and loan guarantees
Training and workshops
